I would imagine that council housing is much more scarce now than it was around 25 years ago when as a single person, I wasn't even allowed to join the list!

Certainly not the case in my area (speaking as one single person who WAS offered a flat with a small garden, but turned it down as I no longer needed it).

one thing that i do worry about in our rented home is the wooden floor in the lounge- it has only been waxed lightly so soaks up anything and nightmare to clean as you cant use wet mop.

its not the pets that will damage - its more likely to be us- scratching, and staining it as it isnt protected- what can i do to protect it???

Put down some rugs?

yep, got one big one in centre, but its mainly near front door and door leading to hall- gets dirty and has gotten dark, ive a doormat- but cant put it in infront of door as it cant be opened as the bottom of door is too close to floor. so got a mat to the side.

are there special cleaning products or treatments for natural wood floors. the other wooden floors in the house are original and can take anything, and are easy to clean. its just that the loung floor is new and basically hand made! think he has done it that way so when we leave it can be sanded and treated again. This is what he has said he'd done for the kitchen stairs- untreated wood so he can just sand down after the lease.

but i suppose wood is his forte, so i hope heknows the wear and tear that can occur.

A single friend in her 30s had been on the Council list for about 6 years and then the Council offered her the option of transferring onto a housing association list in order to speed up her chances of getting a place to live.  She accepted the transfer option but was only entitled to a bedsit (no partner or kids and working for a living see?).  My daughter and her boyfriend rented a flat privately and they asked if no pets meant the snakes. It did because of the danger of snakes getting into the plumbing and the cost that might cause.  Because they were honest and up front about it though the landlord made an exception for them.

Daughter and bf are now buying on a private estate and the restriction of pets is in the deeds which is a Council restriction so if they rented their house out, the restriction of pets in the tenancy would be them following the Council's restrictions
