i find socializing at doggy parks and just knowing your basics of training is probably enough. I'd only attend the kindergarten class if you are inexperienced with training. It does help!

>So in a nutshell, Training Classes for people who live rurally i.e. not coming into contact with many other dogs are fine for socialising, apart from this I personally train my own dogs.

I'm sure that there must be some rural areas where there are fewer dogs to come into contact with but I live in a very rural area where there are absolutely loads of dogs to meet - all of which are met under less stressful conditions than being crammed up in a village hall. I did consider puppy training classes but they are held in the nearest town and, to be honest, with my pup getting constant chances to socialise they didn't appeal. I realise that my decision wasn't helped by earlier experiences with another dog who mainly learnt more about bad behaviour from what she witnessed at her chaotic puppy "obedience" classes!

I don't know whether or not someone has already said something similar but I was given a great piece of advice:

"Dog training classes aren't about training the dog, but training the owner to get out of the dog what they want it to do."

Puppy 'classes' will benefit greatly in the vital socialisation stage of the pups development and of course there will be other like minded little bundles there for interaction!  Also it will provide you with advice and practical tips and tricks on where to start, what to say, actions, rewards etc etc

Personally I think practical training classes are a great idea for people with a dog of any age but its up to the owner really and of course the level of experience they possess :)

If you have children it would be good to find a trainer who will allow the children to go along to the classes as this will equip even a pre-school age child with the very basics neccessary to ensure that the dog knows its place is below them in the pack (but of course adults should never leave a child alone with any dog!).  We have a trainer in our area who actively encourage children of any age to accompany parents/grandparents/carers as not only is it good for the kids and their dog to learn together and develop a stronger bond but also for the other dogs there to socialise with 'small people' :)
