I had the same experience with Spooky, who having scored 13, was spot on for the average for elkhounds. I had a lovely time explaining to the very earnest young vet why we could not solely use dogs which scored less than the breed average given that we have so few registrations these days.
Years ago, we had Seb's hips scored, and the vet who took the X-Ray asked us if we wanted to send the plates in, as they looked bad. We told him to go ahead anyway. They came back as 8.
I still find it shocking that we should have been asked if we wanted to send them in. If the bad scores as well as the good don't get sent in, it gives a completely false picture of the state of the hips in the breed.
