I would love to know how they worked that out bananas as I think it's bloody ridiculous.

As do I, but the decent rescues aren't doing that - they're advertising the dogs in situ, securing homes or foster homes, then bringing a few over at a time.  I've been following one shelter and seeing it happen with a number of others for about a year now.  It's the dodgy places that bring them in in large numbers.

Ann is right, owners aren't paying for the dogs themselves - they're paying for transport, vaccines, flea/tick/worm treatment, neutering if needed.  Again, just like any rescue here, really.
