I only take a cheque if they have sent it in advance and it has had time to clear. I discuss this with them after I have met them and accepted them onto my waiting list. I would be worried that if they haven't had time to get money out of the bank how will they have time for a pup :/

Surely that hinges on where you live etc. I couldn't take money out of the bank myself, I don't drive and we are miles from everywhere. My husband often does not get home in time from work to go to the bank. So I have all day to look after dogs, but no time to go to banks. :)

The thing is with that Marianne you'd expect to know you are getting a puppy weeks if not months in advance and therefore people would have ample time to sort out the cash, even if it's taking out cash each day from an ATM to get to the amount required

Yes I agree you can sort out getting cash for a puppy, my point was just that finding it hard to get to a bank is NOT the same as not having time for a pup.

I empathise with the above as I live in the middle of nowhere too!

I paid for my last 3 pups by cheque, for logistical reasons, but a) the breeders are good friends and b) I'd agreed that was fine by them, in advance.

I wouldn't dream of paying by cheque if it was someone I didn't know.

I also always count the cash. I once sold a horse for cash, for quite a lot of money. It was embarrassing standing there counting it, but who'd have guessed it, one of the envelopes full of £20 notes, was £200 down....

What was the outcome of buyer paying by cheque?

ON the other hand...

Many years ago I bred Burmese cats.   Someone my husband knew wanted one and it appeared to be a good home.

With kittens you keep them 15 weeks and he'd planned to have one before they were born.   Plenty of time to have the money ready.

My answer was "Which half do you want? "   I did not smile.

He went off and 10 minutes later came back with all of the money.

I heard a long while after from a reliable source that we wouldn't have seen the rest of the money.

On the other hand, he adored the cat and it had a very long happy life.

Sometimes you just can't predict what people are going to be like where money is concerned, so it's best to err on the side of caution and listen to your gut feelings :-)

Dill you are hardcore ! If you ever want a job in income recovery give me a shout! (Don't do it it takes your soul)

So between you and your Husband you would not have time to get money out of the bank if you were going to pick up a puppy and the breeder had explained they only took cash? So how would you pay for the puppy? (Breeder has already said cash only)

If I am waiting for a puppy and I've been on a waiting list for months I would make sure I had exactly what the breeder wanted even if I had to walk miles to a bank just in case they didn't let me have my pup.

Just adding on..........

I agree if a breeder wants cash (for very good reason) they should have cash.  But if it is of some difficulty for some people to do that they should know in advance........how can you not know you will not be bringing cash?....... in which case surely such people should tell the breeder they will be paying by cheque and forward the amount 7-10 days in advance or make sure it has cleared in time for collection.

But, a breeder needs to make it very clear about how a payment will work and should not be embarrassed if it is ignored by the new owner and they then turn up with a cheque, they need to stand their ground and state that the cheque needs time to clear first, if that means waiting, it means waiting.........

Things like this only go wrong if ground rules are not laid, people are not mind readers, you have to talk to each other beforehand. ;-)
