I know this an old post but I need to vent my anger.
I have two entire male golden retrievers. They are well behaved and are trained/ training gundogs. I live on a modern estate in a rural area next to a wood which is normally great for the shorter walks. Unfortunately we have recently had a dog explosion on the estat, mostly first time dog owners and mostly bitches....
These last few weeks the whole population h for as decided to follow eachother coming into season, in fact it started over a month ago and is gaining momentum. This afternoon I was in the wood, which seemed quiet when I got there, but within minutes I was dragging one of my boys off an off-lead bitch. 'Is she in season?' 'no she should be out now, she has just stopped bleeding yesterday!' ????????????????
Amazingly my dogs came with me and once out of sight, one ran off in different direction. Once I realised he wasn't just after a squirrel I chased after him and found him with his nose up another bitches' backside. This one was on a lead, being led towards a road by its owners!!!! 'Is she in season?' 'Yes' they laughed indulgently. 'well then stop walking towards the road until I get my dog!!!!' I shouted, not so politely anymore. I said he couldn't help it and their bitch was advertising herself all over the wood. 'oh so now it our dog's fault, is it?' she said. I told her she only had to keep her dog away for a couple of weeks but for mine it was bitch after bitch after bitch and the whole thing goes on for months!!!!!!! She continued shouting but I no longer heard because I just wanted to get my dogs out of that place.
suffice to say I will have to keep my dogs away from all the local parks and fields and get into the car every time they need a walk. For how long? God only knows. It seems every dog we meet is a bitch in season.
Is that fair?

Nope.. I was walking along the south downs way and had the Bernese off lead and the Lab on. The Bernese was sat at a gate waiting for a lady and her JRT to come through. The lady said nothing to me and walked through the gate. My boy ran at the JRT who then slipped her collar and lead. The woman tried to grab her bitch while swinging her lead at my boy only to say her bitch was in season

and :-(
The decent thing would of been before walking through the gate and clearly seeing my Bern off lead was to ask me to put him on and also making sure that her bitch was secure in her collar too.. But as it was no.. I was in the wrong.. This was a weekend, busy place to walk dogs, most off lead anyway.. Stupid woman!!!

When I had a bitch in season I kept her in her own garden.
I have encountered roaming dogs on the road in my village when someone walked their in season bitch through, two had escaped and were in danger of being run over.
I was exercising my elderly dog the other day when he made a beeline for a dog someone was walking, he didn't mount her but it was obvious from his behaviour she was in season. I wasn't going to comment to the owner, until she kicked my dog!!!!!
