as they are acting as a puppy farm outlet,

The puppies sold at Harrods do NOT come from puppy farms, as I have said before. What puppy farms do you know that hip score the parents for a start?

If their breeders are responsible enough to hip score then why are they not responsible enough to sell their puppies themselves and offer lifetime back up rather than taking an easy profit by selling to a pet shop?

One of the litters in there today was 5 cavalier X poodles for £1,500 each!

Do Harrods offer a lifetime of advice on training/feeding and general care of the puppy and do they offer to take the dog back if the dog needs to be re-homed, as most ethical breeders would?  If not then I think they are helping puppy farmers or 'less ethical' breeders, if they are willing to take them back and re-home after say 5 or 6 years then I have to hold my hands up to them and apologise.

Their breeders usually do.

So do the people that buy the puppy have the breeders contact details and the pdigree details?
- By Mandy D [gb] Date 04.12.10 21:50 UTC
We met a lovely lady today who came to talk to us after going in to see the puppies. She had expressed interest in the poodle puppies and asked where they had come from and who the breeder was. They told her that this information was only given to the purchaser after they had bought the puppy. She then told them that she bred poodles herself and what her affix was and how anyone who was interested in a puppy could look up all the details and ask anyone about her dogs!
- By Perry Date 04.12.10 22:24 UTC
Surely most people would need to know before purchasing?
- By Mandy D [gb] Date 04.12.10 22:33 UTC
What are they trying to hide or who are they trying to protect by keeping it secret?

Playing devils advocate here i'm imagining with the protests ect there could be (i'm not saying there is but) a fanatic that would be willing to cause harm to the puppy breeders hence why the details are not given prior to sale.

OK that is a possible reason but our protests only started very recently and this was Harrods policy before that. It just shows that they knew before that people do not approve of what they are doing whether they are "activists", other breeders or the Kennel Club.

I've been thinking about this and really if anyone is that serious about pedigree's and really wanting to know what lines they would be going straight to a breeder, they'd know what they want or don't want and wouldn't be paying silly prices for a pup.

As for the comment about those who sell to Harrods, about how changing that to selling 'pets'...Their food hall is amazing and all those designer clothing ranges etc, so really selling products to Harrods isn't the issue, its pets, hence the adding of that small word would be a good idea?

I really with the government would put forward a law which prohibits cats and dogs being sold in shops and other commerical places. I can't see a law which is so simple in itself can be that difficult to pass through, especially when they can relax a law for the lorry drivers recently.

The comment is on the petition so the context is puppies anyway rather than all of Harrods. I have read somewhere that a law banning the sale of puppies and kittens was nearly brought in but there was powerful lobbying from trade organisations and so it didn't happen. All the dog organisations need to work together and maybe things will change with the new Advisory Council on Dog breeding as well. Some Swedish people talked to us yesterday and they were amazed that it was still allowed over here.

In this day and age i'd have to agree with them. But then also you think of 2 other big western countries that still allow it to go on are Australia and America. Does Canada? I recall seeing a Bernese in a pet shop when I was last in Cape Cod, the pup was far too large for the cage it was in and clearly was around 4 months of age :-(.. It had been sold in a matter of minutes of me seeing it, rushing off to find my family and going back, thats the sad part the hands these pups fall into..

Some of the states in America and the provinces in Canada have brought in laws to stop it. There are very big campaigns there and in Australia as well against pet shop puppies and puppy farming.

Well done Mandy!

What truly responsible breeder, who cares for the welfare of their puppies throughout their lives, who follows all the guidelines for health testing their dogs and rears them well in their home (or kennel) and fully socialises them, who Kc registers them and takes all this time and work for the joy and pleasure of producing a well balanced healthy puppy-- would then sell the litter to a puppy supermarket? Even a 'high class' place such as Harrods? Do the Kc and breed clubs endorse the selling of litters at Harrods? or would the member be bought to task for it? How could a breeder leave this highly important task of finding the correct home for their loving and carefully produced puppy and its lifetime after care and advice to a ------retail outlet who only sell produce for profit?

Harrods or 'Puppy Market Central' supermarket, its all the same. breeders in it for the money but with either something to hide or CBA where their puppies (kittens etc) end up.
