Just a query WHY do you have the DAM!!!! To me this doesnt make sense the only people who might have the dam back for a litter are people who have sold on breeding terms? How experienced a breeder are you?
> gwen after reading every thing you have said i do agree with you ,and maybe the mix was just alitter to rich for them ,my breed are terible for dicky tums x
White Lilly
The sugar in the sweet milk will ferment in the gut as it is a dark, warm place and sugars love this. This in turn will give the pups a lot of wind and make their tummies distended. This will cause discomfort and crying but will not cause lasting harm. Anyon who has ever taken lactulose will probably have had the same feeling as it causes similar effects. The pups will need to pass all the wind before they become more comfortable.
hi cprice996 ,ive had this girl here with nme for my friend ! the dam comes here alot and stays alot to so she knows me ,my family and my dogs very well ,im not a big EXPERIENCED breeder , and its not law that you carnt have another dog at yours to whelp if your not on breeding terms ? im having 1 of the pups owner is having 2
hi annm172 ...well all pups seem ok 2day ,drinking and sleeping ,2 of them are alittle constpated lol from 1 to the other ,might turn heating down a touch ....
It seems to me the arguments between formula milk and carnation type formulas is very similar to the raw V kibble argument. I have not had to hand rear a litter but I know my puppies in my last litter wouldn't touch Whelpi when I was weaning them . they would happily lap cows or goats milk until it came out of their ears.
I have seen references to the sugar in the milk several times in this thread. Perhaps people are not aware that Carnation do several types of tinned milk. Condensed which is very thick and has extra sugar added, and evaporated which does not have extra sugar. I would be very surprised if the original poster used condensed milk to feed her puppies particularly as she stated that she diluted it 1/2 milk 1/2 water. condensed milk would still be way too thick to feed puppies.
yes helen it was evaporated milk ,i should have put that thankyou for clearing that 1 up for me :)

Hi white lilley, just a thought. When you fed the puppies, you did have them lying flat across your lap to suck, rather than in an upright position didn't you?

when I had to bottle feed my last litter I held them in the palm of my hand with the head between my fingers puppy facing away from me so that thier front legs paddle as they suckle, I had a cushion on my knee for the back legs which they pushed on.
Once you get the hang of it , it is an enjoyable experience, you just have to watch the amount and keep a strict record for each day for weight and amount of milk each puppy takes.
i fed them on my nee same sort of position they would be in when feeding from mum ,was told by my mentor many years ago not to feed upright as milk can go onto lungs ,they took to it like ducks to water too :) so if i need to feed them if mums milk goes i know the girls will be fine :) dont know about the boys lol ...ive weighd them and all have doulbed birth weight give a few grams :) and our little runt is the 1st to open her eyes at 9day old todays :) she also frights the big pups for the back nipples and always wins ,its funny to see when their feeding i count to make sure all there lol i can only ever see 7 i lift up mums leg and there she is happly sucking away :) x

well done yuou are doing well x
thanks hun....well mum hasnt drank much in the last couple of days ,her food is well soaked ,she will only drink 2 maybe 3 times aday and its only about a pint , surly this isnt enough to keep 8 10day old pups in enough milk is it ? god im gray lol

What we put ourselves through lol.
Well done on getting the pups through the worst i'm sure if mum wanted more she'd drink it x
true put a pint a day for a large breed just dont seem right when feeding 8 ....i can only go on my own dogs lol ,when our med breed had pups she drink about 4pints aday mabe more ..x

my girl would drink loads after she has fed the puppies and after she has eaten, between that she would have little sips.So I would offer it to her (fresh and very cold) at these times .
I found that if I left water in the room or box so that it was room temperature she wouldnt drink it.
Roni
the only time she will drink is in her box now , not touch water at all ,she will just have little licks of milk when shes feeding pups ,its driving me mad ,she not even drink after eating ?
shes just drank half apint of lactol :)

thats fine WL just give her that if thats what she wants.. my girl only drank in her box and I had to offer it to her holding the bowl ..she wants a fuss .
yes tihs is what shes doing :) thanks xx
