We were at a Open Show entered into Any Veriety working, the judges little helper was making sure everybody had turned up when she stopped and said what the hell is a Bullmastiff???  a little cough and a wave from me.

But what tickles me most was when we were up at a local carboot and a man said, oooh she is lovely (the dog) our family has kept and bred them for years, she is one of the best kept boxer's iv seen for a long time....   ???? (never mind)

Just of google a  " Kooikers" and "Stabyhoun" think I would recognise them both, but just off to check!!
BRB!!
Yes confirmed I knew them both..  the stobyhoun after reading the breed standard, I may not have recognised one in the flesh, (or fur)!! I was thinking them a  bigger dog. Lovely!
- By LucyDogs [gb] Date 19.08.09 17:12 UTC
I would probably recognise the Kooiker but not the Stabyhoun! I have enough trouble with my American cocker, he's been called a Cavalier cross, a cocker cross, a 'Columbia' (clumber) spaniel, you name it! Even my Cavvies get called King Charles because the average Joe Public doesn't know they're different breeds, but I don't mind that.

As regards companion shows, I am still cringing over the acquaintance I asked to judge our one and didn't realise she only knows anything about our own breed - she asked our chairman if his Curly Coat retrievers were..... (wait for it!) Bedlingtons!!!!!!!!!!!

Did you see you can get them in liver & white too?  The one I saw was black & white though.    When you have Munsterlanders you are very used to 'some type of spaniel/setter/retriever'  comments!   And it's given me an interest in the Continental gundog breeds.

We have a breed never recognised.....
My daughter spotted a lady with two and went straight up and said ooh I love this breed...the owner looked at her and said tiredly..'you mean mean yorkies'...hah, my daughter said certainly not these are Aussies...my favourite!
The lady was aghast.
- By bilbobaggins [gb] Date 20.08.09 08:32 UTC Edited 20.08.09 08:36 UTC
I liked the liver and white too.

I meet a munsterlander while out walking... his lady says every one thinks he is a  "very leggy retreiver" LOL
- By bostontea [gb] Date 20.08.09 08:45 UTC
People have referred to mine as french bulldogs, miniature pitbull, a pug, french pitbull boxers, 'a staffy boxer cross thingy' and the one I couldn't help but laugh out loud to...........a midget boxer!!

> sometimes I think it would be a good idea to carry leaflets around with me

The joys of owning a rare breed lol.... I bought a T shirt with a picture of a Komondor on the front and the breed description on the back...sorted...or so I thought until someone asked me to stand still a bit longer as they hadn`t finished reading lol!

Tangle gets called all sorts from Labradoodle to Albino OES!!....The best one I heard was from a little boy while we were waiting to go in the ring at Bakewell I heard him ask his mum if Tangle was a Polar Bear lol

:-D Love it!

Sweatshirt or t-shirt for anyone with a less than common breed is a brilliant idea...I keep meaning to order one myself, to attempt to save the bother of explaining over and over again what my breed are - and to wear to companion shows :-D

The problem is you can't just say "he/she is a ___", there usually has to follow a long explanation as they continue to look blank! I took two of the puppies to a garden centre last week and every few paces I was repeating myself....amazed I had any voice left by the end of the day :)

Man thats funny!

My friends pom has been called a bear cub and a tiiny sheep by kids befor but when she took him to the vets a vet nurse told her that CATS should be kept in cages!!! lol

Holds her hand up!  Having been mad about the Pastoral breeds for many, many years (only they weren't known as Pastorals when I started), I have an avid interest that means I will research anything new in the breeds.  Toys are my second love, and I will admit that I would never try to give advice on Terriers and Hounds, because I lack any in depth knowledge.

And it's right what dogs a babe says.  I loved Maths and English at school.  Hated History and Geography.  Guess which I did well in?  Anything that has our interest is going to be the same.

In no response to anyone, just tagging onto the end of the topic.

Not what i've heard at a CS, but more what my dog did to a poor lady sitting watching one at ringside. He was being nosey and went to say hello to the lady and then cocked his leg up and onto her hamper full of food for her and her family.. Mortified... Mortified.. Apologies galore came from my mouth, luckily she was ok about it...

I have sen some very clued up people working on the entries desk and people trying to get dogs into the incorrect classes, they were all advised accordingly. Someone was trying to put a Lab into the working group class. Heyho..

I do like the fact that they give us (the dog show bunch) an insight into how the dog loving but not deeply involved bunch of folk think, attitudes to dogs, breeds, misconceptions and everything!  May be a generalisation, but the average joe public dog lover at a Comp. show think that Labradoodles and cockerpoos are proper pedigree, registered breeds, that dog showing is a profession, and one from which lots of money can be made, that every Best of Breed at Crufts is a "Crufts Champion", and that a "licensed breeder" equals a good breeder, and that the ideal place to buy a lovely pet puppy is from someone who has a pet bitch.
- By JeanSW Date 20.08.09 20:13 UTC

> that dog showing is a profession, and one from which lots of money can be made,

I just recently had a telephone enquiry, and the potential new puppy owner told me IF YOU SHOW THEN IT'S A BUSINESS!

I was very restrained and just said that I felt her attitude was very rude and misinformed.  But I wish I didn't let them get my goat like that!

ROFL - must be somewhere that we can sell these bits of cardboard off for cash - why did no one tell me? :-D

> potential new puppy owner told me IF YOU SHOW THEN IT'S A BUSINESS!

I gather she's not having a puppy from you now and has no potential?
- By Dill [gb] Date 21.08.09 10:29 UTC

>she asked our chairman if his Curly Coat retrievers were..... (wait for it!) Bedlingtons!!!!!!!!!!!

ROFL :-D    I've been told with all the confidence of total ignorance that my Bedlingtons are only Poodles with a fancy clip   It was started years ago apparently, but the person who was so informed had no idea why this was done LOL

I've also been told by a very knowledgeable person with GREAT AUTHORITY (they had a Whippet on a lead)  that Bedlingtons are "always got from crossing Whippets with each other"  they got quite narky with me when I asked how there are any Whippets left if they only produce Bedlingtons from them :-D

>IF YOU SHOW THEN IT'S A BUSINESS!

It's a very peculiar Business that keeps paying money out and not getting any back - that's called bankruptcy I believe :-D :-D :-D

Oh my, that is the funniest thing i have heard all day, really made me chuckle.

That is an interesting thought, you breed 2 of the same and get something different. That would be a bloody miracle. :-D

On a simliar theme, there was an online ad recently for Rare Silver Pug pups "bred the only way you can to guarantee a true silver by breeding black to black"  !!!! :)  If that was so, what do we mate to what to get Black pugs then?
- By susieq [gb] Date 22.08.09 08:12 UTC
With my Leo I always get 'Let me guess.............I know.............German Shepherd but crossed with what???'  Arrrgggghhhh!

I nearly had handbags at dawn at a Companion show earlier this year.  A woman barred my entry into the ring because she didn't believe my Leo should be in puppy class.  When the steward finally came to my rescue and let me, in the silly woman didn't realise she was sat next to my partner and was still going on about making a complaint about an adult dog in puppy class - my partner politely told her Fozzie Bear was only 10mths and had about another 4 stone to go!!!
- By LucyDogs [gb] Date 22.08.09 14:15 UTC
Blimey, good thing he was a Leo and not a Newfie, if she didn't realise there was such a thing as a large breed puppy!

Not at a companion show, but the colour cross comment had me recalling a surreal conversation I had some years back with a lady who's been in the Cavalier breed for donkey's years. At the time I'd only had Henry for about 2 years, but I was flabbergasted to learn she didn't know that 2 blenheims mated can only ever produce blenheims, no matter what else is in their ancestry!

>I'm in total agreement.  I'm not 'young' but I don't consider myself 'old'.  I wonder how many 'young people' would've recognised a Stabyhoun?   I met one on a local walk recently and I was pleased to say I recognised the breed although my pronounciation left a lot to be desired.    His owners said most guesses are Lab x ESS and that no-one - except me - has recognised him not even the vet!

Oh really - I didn't realise there were any in the UK! I have been interested in this breed for a good few years but have never met one, I would love to own one (or more) in the future. I must get up to date on my research!
- By Lisakom [gb] Date 22.08.09 15:53 UTC

> only 10mths and had about another 4 stone to go!!!

lol....I know that one well...with Tangle standing at 33inches at only 9mths old people rarely believe me when told how old he is :D
- By rjs [gb] Date 22.08.09 17:52 UTC
I've just been speaking to my mum who was at a companion show today and was aksed by a young lad if her shelties were long haired dachshunds!!

This dog was owned by a Dutch couple who bought him - as he was their pet - through the Pet Passport scheme when they came to live in Scotland so he may still be the sole representative of the breed in the UK.

Ah that makes sense. Thanks for letting me know, I will keep researching!
- By susieq [gb] Date 23.08.09 17:35 UTC
To be fair to the woman Leos are also classed as a giant breed (and according to KC breed standards the min height/weight is actually more than a Newf), so he is a big fella.  But why on earth would I want to show an adult dog in a puppy class anyhoo!?!

I have had asked at a charity show for staffordshire bull rescue...is that a mini mastiff? and within the next half hour is that a puppy mastiff? about my 7 year old pug!
- By stamboom [gb] Date 23.08.09 19:10 UTC
stbyhouns are wonderful dogs,
when i first heard about the kooikerhondje, when i was reasurching i stmbled across the Drentsche Patrijshond, Stabyhoun, Wetterhoun and markiesje.
i love all of the dutch breeds they are so attractive, the kooikerhondje is by far my fav.

this has alot of links to stabyhoun kennels. http://www.frisiangem.net/links.php
- By stamboom [gb] Date 23.08.09 19:12 UTC
well pups are dwaf mastiffs. so i can see how people can get mixed up.
- By cutewolf [gb] Date 23.08.09 20:04 UTC

>traitor  ;-)

Oooh don't worry, my heart still belongs to the Toller! It's just a distant dream of mine to own a Stabyhoun, and since they're not establised in the UK it will be a long time before I can have one!
The do remind me of Tollers though, perhaps why I like them! Little black and white (or brown and white) Tollers... from the descriptions I've read they sound like they are just as versatile but a bit more laid back.
- By moj1966 [gb] Date 26.08.09 18:01 UTC
My bulldogs often get mistaken for a fat boxer, or a dwarf boxer lol
