No real update as such but the samples have been taken and sent forward for analysis for toxic tests.
He had an ultrasound which showed that he has internal bleeding.
Again all other symptoms are the same and that the vets have said that there is some hope.
I managed to get to work, though had a few crying fits through my shift.
I know its not my fault but its still hard to deal with in any case.
I'm glad that i have some good friends around me who have been a rock to me.
Hoping that i can see him tomorrow if the vets think its a good idea and a friend has offered to come with me for morale support.

Off to see him shortly. He has perked up a bit today which is promising.
They have a list of a number of toxins which it could be so are going to treat all of them.
Brilliant. Give him a hug from everyone on here.
I hope your dad is coming round to admitting that he is glad you reacted so quickly when the dog was ill. I still can't believe that anyone could see an animal lose so much fluid and in such a state and not want to rush it straight to the vet! The dog is very lucky to have you in his life.

It was so hard seeing him, i walked past him as i didn't recognise him. His face is that swollen i thought he was a Sharpei. He hardly responded to me and that was difficult to deal with.
Basically his blood count is down and dropping and his body is attacking the red blood cells. It means that any infection from the poison is not being treated due to this.
They have ordered bloods as they are looking to do a blood transfusion in the next few days if my dad agrees to it.
They think that it is more than likely to be the mole poisoning which was put down. Found out it was pellets, so unless he has got hold of a mole with the poison in it then i have no idea how its got into his system. There is no antidote for this poison either.
They are treating him with vitamin K just in case its rat poison.
The vet was honest and straight down the line with me and said that he came in at the right time, any later and it would of been bad for him, any earlier and he probably would of turned me away and told me to take him off his food for a few days.
He has given him a 50/50 chance of surviving , which is more than i thought from what he has been saying.
He had a huge hug, it was hard but i'm glad i've seen him.
Even if he didn't seem to respond to you being there, I'm sure he knew you were and it made him feel better. I bet his tail was wagging like mad on the inside.
> He hardly responded to me and that was difficult to deal with.

Although he may have not responded to you in the usual way, he was probably glad to see you too, it is so important that he see's familiar faces, we visited Fudge everyday as soon as we were allowed to, it can be very therapeutic a huge boost and benefit which can aid there recovery. (so the vets told us) He may not look at his best, i no how you feel, again Fudge became very swollen in his face, neck and paws after a few days it did subside. (in his case it was just where the fluids were not getting into him, and kinda seeping under the skin) We are all hoping he makes steady progress, all the very best.

Thanks for your kind replies. My sister went to see him this afternoon and he was much the same with her.
My Dad still doesn't wish to see him with his face swollen.
My Dad has agreed to him having the blood transfusion as and when its needed, which is the news i have been waiting for all day.
I can only hope they do this soon and they can help him on his road to recovery.

Poor boy, I have my fingeres crossed for you.
Sending you loads more good luck, I really hope he makes it. What an awful thing to happen.
Poor you, your dad really can't cope can he? Thank goodness the dog has one grownup in his life. Fingers firmly crossed that the transfusion gives him a big lift.

How is he this morning? Has he had a blood transfusion yet?

Hi,
He is actually more or less the same as yesterday though his blood count is rising which is a good thing.
The blood donor dog went in last night to give blood.
They won't do any transfusion unless his blood drop to a certain level.
Fingers crossed he is on the slow road to recovery.
Was thinking that seeing as they take him out for a small walk to go to the toilet i may ask if it would benefit if we took our dogs that he likes to see him outside, this may help him.
I personally think that trying to keep things as normal as possible can only be a good thing for him.
Will let vets decide on this one

Keeping everything crossed here.I hope the blood transfusion will help when it can be done. Two of my own dogs are blood donors as it happens.

Good to here that his blood count is rising, that must surely be a good sign.
Here's hoping that he continues to improve.

I have decided what ever the outcome i'd like my Bernese to become a blood donor. Do i need to speak to the vets about this or is it a different organisation i need to contact.

First of all, speak to your vet; there are health, age and weight restrictions. There is
this register but how 'official' that is I have no idea.

My vet keeps a list of dogs that he can call upon in an emergency to donate blood. The dogs he uses have to weigh over 33kg and have an excellent temeperament and be up to date with their vaccinations. My GR is one of the dogs on his list but has never yet been called to donate. If I recall correctly MarianneB's dogs donate on a regular basis and the blood is stored at a blood bank.
Fingers and paws crossed for a full recovery for your dad's dog.

Went to see him again today. He has a lot of fluid in random parts of his body. His skin is peeling off and leaving open wounds, though the vet said he doesn't appear to be in any pain.
I have asked about him being referred to a specialist now to see if they can work on anything.
Though the vets did say that if he remained in this way for a period of time he would need to be pts as its no life for him, which i do agree with.
Just need to see if anyone else can help him before we consider that.
He was more alert today and raised his head at my voice. They said in view that he is responding to me, they handed me some tinned meat to see if would eat it, previously not eating anything and having it syringed into his mouth. He took the whole lump and then realised due to his swollen face he couldn't chew it. I broke it up into smaller pieces and he ate it.. Was so happy with this.
They stood him up and did some massage/physio on him.
I said his name and made a silly noise, he looked up at me and wagged his tail!!! First time since he's been in.
They feel its all good for him and its giving him a boost.
There is nothing else to report right now, he's not getting any better, nor is he getting any worse and still looks like a Sharpei..
We are hoping to take in our bitch for him to spend time with, vets think it would be a good idea for him.

Been thinking of you Sue - and sending positive thoughts your way for your sick boy

Thanks Rachel.
Did you ever meet Bentley at all? I know you came up to help me out with Kai a few times, can't recall if you ever met him or not.
How are your lot doing?

Met most the doglets there - Bentley may even have been one the ones to jump in the car to come with Kai on his walk! All of the doglets are real characters aren't they :) I am hoping all goes well for him Sue - you have been super and a real star throughout this - I know this must be so tough - lovely to hear he wagged his tail though :)
Boys are good enjoyed the walks in the rain today just about to give them tea now!

Sue, if the lab results show that it
is something picked up from the golf course, please tell the local press to warn others. It might affect their dogs or even people too.
I'm very glad he's showing some improvement - long may it continue.
Sounds like he's a fighter, I am hoping that he begins to turn a corner soon. You are being very brave.

There is no test out there that will ever confirm or deny the chemical Phostoxin being in his system. They have said we will never know on this toxin just like there is no antidote.
I really think its about time he is seen by a specialist now. I asked the vet about cancers, he did say this is a potential route to check, but again different checks need to be done on top of what has been done.
I think at this time if there is improvement and a chance my Dad will keep on paying for him to remain with the vets and have all the tests required,

Sue I really hope and pray that he will be ok x
sending you lots of hugs x
Sue, it's hard to say just how much we're all rooting for you and your boy right now. It sounds like really good news that he is able to stand up now, take some food and even wag his tail. That must have really warmed your heart, even though there is obviously still a long way to go. You are both in our thoughts and we really hope you will have good news soon.

Its almost over. ((sobbing heart out as i write this))
He is much worse today and the vet wanted him to be pts as there is nothing more they can do.
My father said to do the blood transfusion just to see which they are doing now.
Very very bleak times...
I guess any update will be more upsetting.
I said i wanted to be there when the time comes to say goodbye, may father said no, but has now changed his mind.
I know it'll be hard the hardest thing i've ever done, but i feel i need to do it.
Poor Boy, love him sooo much.

I'm so vrey, very sorry. :(

I'm so sorry to read this :( :( :(
My thoughts and prayers are with you and gentle hugs being sent to this dear lad.
I'm sure he will be happier for having you with him - it's never easy but I feel that I need to be with them as much as they need me to be there too.
Blessings,
Teri xxx

I know how you feel, I had to make the same decision last Wednesday and it is very hard but the biggest service we can do for our dogs. Thinking of you and hope you are able to come to terms with your painful duty soon and that your father will start to support you.
I have just read about your poor boy and poor you. Hard as it might be, do what your instinct tells you and stay with him when the time comes. I'm not really sure at this stage that it is your father's decision to take. You must do what you think is right and best for the boy and for yourself. You have done absolutely eveything you can and your judgement has been correct all the way. Be true to yourself now.
If I recall correctly MarianneB's dogs donate on a regular basis and the blood is stored at a blood bank.Yes indeed. I haven't read all the latest posts in this thread yet so apologies if this is repeated, but all the details can be found here:
http://www.petbloodbankuk.org/ With these, the dogs only have to weigh over 25 kgs. (Plus be between 1 and 8 years of age, not be on medication, be healthy, and of course have the temperament for it as each donation takes about half an hour or so, it's roughly a pint of blood given each time, which is enough to help FOUR sick dogs. :) It's not entirely suitable for show dogs as a fair sized patch is clipped off the neck each time -that's where the blood is taken from. )

Oh Sue, I am SO sorry to read the latest!
HUGS.

Oh no! I am so very sorry!
Only just caught up with all of this - nothing to say except sending lots of positive healing thoughts your way.
